March Programs and Events
Our senses are very important to how we interact with the world. We can explore nature using our senses. Join us Saturday, March 23rd from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM for our Family Discovery: Exploring the Senses program. As a family, you will use colors, shapes, textures, scents, and sounds to observe plants and look for signs of animals in our environment. No pre-registration is required for this free program. Designed for children aged 4-7. Meet on the Mansion Porch.
Join us for Birds and Beverages: Project FeederWatch on Sunday, March 24th from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM! This citizen science project collects data on birds visiting feeders in the winter. Enjoy hot tea, cocoa, apple cider, or coffee while we spend time in the Education Building watching our birdfeeders and collecting count data. No registration required for this free program. Drop in anytime between 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM.

April Programs and Events
Kings Gap needs help with park projects. Join us Saturday, April 6th from 9:00 AM - Noon for our Volunteer Work Day. Projects include: leaf clean-up, fence work, painting, gardening, stair work, invasive removal, trail work, and more. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for more info and to sign up!.
Orienteering is the skill of finding your way on a course using a map and compass. Join the Susquehanna Valley Orienteering Club, Saturday, April 6th from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM for their Orienteering for Beginners program as the help you discover more about this sport. Receive instruction on the basics of compass use and map reading. Then, explore a beginner’s orienteering course (white course). Loaner compasses available. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Join us to experience the mysteries and wonders of a spring evening during one of our favorite programs, Experiencing a Sping Night. This program will be held on Saturday, April 13th and Saturday April 20th from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM. The nocturnal forest is alive with the sounds of spring peepers and other creatures. Before exploring, we’ll learn about amphibians as our night vision adjusts. We will then explore the forest pools. Please wear appropriate footwear and bring flashlights. This free program meets at the Pine Plantation. Ages 5 and older.
In this daytime version of our evening program, come learn about amphibians and their habitats. The Spring Salamanders and Frogs Program begins with learning what we will be searching for. We will then explore the forest pools. Please wear appropriate footwear and dress for the conditions. This free program meets Sunday, April 14th from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM at the Pine Plantation. Ages 5 and older.
The Friends of Kings Gap meets on the third Monday of each month in the Education Building. Come out to learn about the group and plan activities for the community. Easter Sunrise Service is sponsored by the Cumberland Valley Christian Laymen’s Association and the Penn Township Fire Department, this sunrise service has been a yearly tradition since the 1950’s, when the Masland Company owned Kings Gap. The service is held rain, shine, or snow! Please dress for the weather and bring your own chair. Meet on the Mansion Lawn Sunday, April 21st at 7:00 AM.
Happy Arbor Day! Do you know the trees around you? Learn some unique characteristics of local tree species and how to identify these trees. Meet Friday, April 26th from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM at Bosler Library in Carlisle, 158 West High Street for Tree ID for Arbor Day.
Celebrate Arbor Day an join us for our Tree ID Hike through the forest. We will explore how to identify our local trees and the unique characteristics they possess. This 1-2 mile hike is intended for families and casual forest goers alike. Expect uneven terrain, bring water and appropriate footwear. Hike will begin with a tree planting. Meet at Kings Gap Hollow Use Area on Saturday April 27th from 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM for this hike.
Wilderness and Remote First Aid (WRFA) instruction provides American Red Cross Certification in the principles and skills to respond to emergencies and give care in areas without immediate emergency medical services (EMS), including wilderness/remote areas, and urban areas experiencing disasters. This hands-on, skills-based course uses classroom instruction and outdoor scenarios to give knowledge, skills, and ability to make sound decisions and deal with medical incidents in remote areas. Presented by MORE-Outdoor.
• Possess current Adult CPR/AED certification (CPR/AED offered April 26, 2 – 5 PM)
• Be at least 16 years of age
Cost: $170.00 per person (WRFA) $225.00 per person (CPR/AED+ WRFA)

Garden Harvest Day 2019
On Sunday, October 6th from noon to 5:00 p.m. celebrate the bounty of autumn with the Friends of Kings Gap, Cumberland County Master Gardeners, and Kings Gap staff. Admission is free although nominal fees will be charged for all “make and take” items. A variety of activities for all ages will feature:
- Kettle-Cooked Chicken Corn Soup
- Apple Cider Pressing
- Apple Butter Making
- Pumpkin Painting
- Bird Feeder Building
- Children’s Games and Crafts
- Hay Rides
- Mum and Pumpkin Walk
- And more…
Bring your appetite and spend an afternoon in the fresh mountain air. All activities will be held in and around the mansion area
Holiday Open House 2019
On Sunday, December 1st and Sunday, December 8th from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day, enjoy this once-a-year opportunity to explore the Cameron-Masland Mansion, a gracious mountain stone villa built in 1908 as a summer home. Take a self-guided tour of both floors of the mansion in seasonal decor. Enjoy music of the season along with light refreshments including hot spiced cider and a variety of delicious cookies, which will be offered throughout the afternoon each day.
